Where to start an AAPI Heritage Month order: nine kitchens, and a guide for each one

AAPI Heritage Month runs all of May, under the widest umbrella on the calendar: East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Pacific. A pan-Asian tray of orange chicken and pad thai does not cover that.

These kitchens already have full ordering guides. Start with the one your office has never tried:

  • Chinese: shared dishes, counted against the headcount
  • Japanese: sushi piece counts and the delivery clock
  • Korean: bibimbap bars, and how much banchan
  • Thai: setting heat, and the fish sauce question
  • Vietnamese: banh mi that survive the box
  • Taiwanese: gua bao and a night market spread
  • Indian: the deepest vegetarian bench here
  • Hawaiian: the plate lunch, built for delivery
  • Filipino: lumpia, pancit, adobo, and how to order them

How to cater Pacific Islander food for AAPI Heritage Month: Chamorro and Samoan, past Hawaii

The full federal name is longer than the acronym: Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander. The Pacific half is the part office catering rarely reaches. Hawaiian food is the only piece most cities can order.

Past Hawaii, two kitchens reward the hunt:

  • Chamorro, from Guam and the Marianas: kelaguen with grated coconut and hot pepper, red rice stained with achote seed, finadene sauce on the side
  • Samoan: sapasui, a chop suey of vermicelli, soy and ginger; palusami, taro leaves baked in coconut cream; panipopo, coconut buns, at the end

Both hold better in transit than most hot catering. Catering partners cluster in California, Washington, Texas, Utah and Hawaii, so ask early. This region’s pantry is broken down ingredient by ingredient.

How to book AAPI-owned catering: the sign out front tells you what a kitchen cooks, not who owns it

An Asian restaurant is not automatically an AAPI-owned business, and an AAPI-owned business does not have to cook Asian food. The noodle shop on the corner may belong to a franchise group. The deli two blocks over may be second-generation Vietnamese. Both facts matter if the month is meant to move money.

AAPI-owned catering lists what is near your office, most of it small. The owner of a Hawaiian restaurant in the East Village told us as much: no chain marketing budget stands behind the food. Ask an owner what they would rather cook. A catering menu is always shorter than a kitchen’s range.

What AAPI Heritage Month catering costs: one umbrella, a wider price range than any single cuisine

The number depends on the route. A banh mi run or a rice-bowl lunch is $12 to $20 per person. Sushi prices on piece count, not headcount, and a staffed spread is a different budget again. Pick the format first, then the number.

The Chamorro or Samoan kitchen is the one no directory search turns up. Name it to CaterAi with your date, and you get either kitchens inside delivery range or a straight answer that there are none.

Every holiday and observance we cater shows what to book after May.

AAPI Heritage Month catering FAQs

What does AAPI stand for, and is AANHPI the same thing?

AAPI is Asian American and Pacific Islander. AANHPI is the longer federal form, Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, which names the Pacific outright instead of folding it in. Either way it is the same month, all of May.

Is one Asian catering order enough for AAPI Heritage Month?

Not really. The umbrella holds East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Pacific, and those kitchens share almost no staples. One order is a lunch, not a program. If the month gets a single slot, spend it on a cuisine the team has never had.

What is kelaguen?

A Chamorro dish from Guam and the Marianas. Grilled chicken, shrimp or beef is chopped and dressed with lemon juice, grated fresh coconut, onion and hot pepper. It is served at room temperature, next to red rice, which makes it unusually easy to deliver.

Does ordering from an Asian restaurant support an AAPI-owned business?

Not always. Plenty of Asian restaurants are franchises or investor-owned, and plenty of AAPI-owned kitchens cook something else entirely. Ownership is easy to look up, and a storefront is not evidence either way. Check the ownership list before you book.
