Where Caribbean American Heritage Month catering already lives: the roti shop, the doubles window, the patty bakery

June marks a community’s life in the United States, so this food already has American addresses.

Most cities with a Caribbean population run the same short list of storefronts:

  • The bakery that sells patties by the box, gone before the lunch rush clears.
  • The roti shop, wrapping to order at a counter with four stools.
  • The doubles window, open early, cash on the sill.
  • The cubano counter, pressing all day.

Almost none use the word Caribbean. The sign says Belizean, Guyanese, Trinidadian, Haitian or Bajan, after the owner’s own country. Which island cooks what covers the food itself.

Why Caribbean American Heritage Month catering is easier from an owner-run kitchen: the person who answers can say yes

Caribbean-owned kitchens near your office are nearly all owner-run, which changes the call. The person who picks up decides. A dish that is not on the catering sheet, a smaller minimum, an earlier delivery: those get answered on the spot.

The doubt runs the other way. Buyers see a storefront and assume it cannot feed eighty. A Belizean kitchen in Chicago told us both halves of that: office clients had never thought to try it, or doubted a shop that size could feed a large group.

Storefronts scale when somebody keeps ordering. Twenty of our restaurant partners have each passed a million dollars in orders.

How to order Caribbean American Heritage Month catering from a counter business: the window and the billing come first

These are restaurants with a catering side, not catering companies. Their heavy weeks are weekends and community events, so a Tuesday at noon is an unusual request, and usually an easy one.

Settle two things on the first call:

  • The window. A shop with one oven is running its own lunch service too. Ask when food can leave the kitchen, then build the meeting around that.
  • The billing. Plenty of small kitchens do not take purchase orders or wait thirty days for payment. That is why procurement has never seen them.

Then hand one kitchen the whole lunch rather than assembling it from three. One delivery, one invoice, and $12 to $20 per person.

How to pick the date for a Caribbean American Heritage Month lunch: mid-June, mid-week, and clear of Juneteenth

June is a thin month for attendance. Summer hours start, vacation opens up, and Juneteenth takes a federal holiday out of the middle. The menu is not the risk here. The room is.

Mid-month and mid-week is the slot that holds. A Tuesday or Wednesday in the second or third week keeps more of the floor in the building than anything in the last.

Leave the Juneteenth week clear as well. Two observances stacked back to back blur into one lunch, and the later one always gets the thinner order. Juneteenth has its own catering plan.

Say Guyanese or Haitian to CaterAi rather than Caribbean, and it works out which of those kitchens deliver to your office. Every observance with a catering page of its own shows what follows June.

Caribbean American Heritage Month catering FAQs

Why is June Caribbean American Heritage Month?

A presidential proclamation on June 5, 2006 made it official, after a long campaign by the Institute of Caribbean Studies and a bill from Congresswoman Barbara Lee. The observance covers the whole month, with no fixed date inside it, so any June weekday works.

What should an office order for Caribbean American Heritage Month?

Pick one kitchen and take its catering menu as it stands. A shop that already feeds graduations and church functions knows which of its dishes hold two hours in a pan. That beats a wish list stitched together from four different restaurants.

Can a small Caribbean restaurant cater for fifty people?

Usually, yes. Storefront kitchens in this trade have fed christenings, graduations and post-funeral repasts at that scale for years, often from a room smaller than your break room. Volume rarely stops the order. Confirm the delivery window and the payment terms instead.

Which US cities have the deepest Caribbean-American food scenes?

New York carries the most, across Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. South Florida comes next, then Boston, Washington DC, Atlanta and Philadelphia. Elsewhere one or two kitchens cover a whole city, which is why the date should be settled before the menu.
