How to use AAPI-owned catering all year: name the cuisine, then confirm the kitchen

This filter gets its heaviest use in May, and it works the other fifty weeks too. The roster is wide: East Asian kitchens through South Asian to Pacific Islander, dozens of cuisines filed under one word.

That width is why scrolling the list cold is slow. Decide what the room is eating, then see who cooks it near you. Four of these kitchens have ordering guides of their own:

  • A high vegetarian count, and no appetite for a second order: Indian catering
  • Food that has to travel, then wait out a long meeting: Vietnamese
  • A room that would rather assemble a bowl than accept a plate: Korean
  • One menu that has to land mild and hot at the same table: Thai

Where the AAPI-owned roster runs past the cuisine guides: Indonesian, Lao, Nepalese, Burmese

The guides stop at eight cuisines. The roster does not. Indonesian, Lao, Nepalese, Burmese and Sri Lankan catering partners work the larger metros, small operations with no category to sit in. Skip the first step for those and ask the kitchen what it sends to offices.

The owners of an Indonesian kitchen in New York put it plainly to us: Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese restaurants sit on every block, while Indonesia, the fourth most populous country on earth, had almost nowhere to eat. Their account of that gap is worth reading. Nasi campur, beef rendang and sate are rice plates, and a rice plate is the easiest thing in catering to deliver.

Which AAPI-owned kitchens can take your order: the minimum and the zone come before the menu

Ownership is not a price input. Budget $12 to $20 a head for a tray spread off this list, with delivery and tax on top. That is the same number any themed office lunch asks for.

Two other numbers matter more, and the kitchen sets both:

  • The order minimum. A team of twelve gets a different shortlist than a floor of eighty.
  • The delivery zone. Plenty of good ones do not cross the bridge or the river at noon.

Ask for both on the first call. Lifting the per-person budget by a dollar also opens the list further than planners expect, because it brings back kitchens the old number priced out.

What a small AAPI-owned kitchen needs to become the office regular: a fixed weekday and a quiet month

Give it the same weekday every time. A kitchen that knows a Wednesday order is coming can staff for it. A different weekday every few months is the request that comes back declined.

Then avoid May, when every office asks at once. February and September are open, the shortlist is longer, and the price does not change.

Browse catering by who owns the business for the other filters, or try immigrant-owned catering, which overlaps it. CaterAi already holds the headcount, the dietary list and the dock notes, so the second booking is short. The four weeks in May have their own plan in AAPI Heritage Month catering.

AAPI-owned catering FAQs

Which cuisines does AAPI-owned catering cover?

It spans East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific. In practice that runs from a Chinese lunch order through Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Filipino and Hawaiian kitchens, plus smaller ones, Indonesian and Nepalese among them, that rarely get a category anywhere else.

Which AAPI cuisine is the easiest first order for a room that has tried none of them?

Vietnamese or Thai. Both are widely familiar, both box cleanly for individual lunches, and neither asks the room to learn anything at the table. Leave raw fish and fried dishes to a kitchen close enough that lunch starts on time, because neither improves in a warmer.

Is beef rendang or nasi goreng a safe order for an office lunch?

Both travel well. Rendang is beef cooked down slowly in coconut milk and spice, served over rice, and it keeps heat and texture through a delivery. Nasi goreng is fried rice, so it reheats poorly but arrives fine. Order either as a rice plate.

Is AAPI-owned catering only for May?

No. Nothing on this list is seasonal except the demand for it. Ordering in February or September gets a longer shortlist, a shorter lead time and the same price, and a kitchen that already knows your dock is easier to book when May comes back around.
