How to word a Memorial Day invite: one line about the day, then the lunch
Memorial Day honors the service members who died in the armed forces. Nothing wider is being marked, and saying that plainly once is enough.
So write one line. Name what the day is for, note that the office is closed Monday, then get on with the lunch. Anything longer starts performing. The catering is not a tribute and should not be introduced as one.
The observance began as Decoration Day after the Civil War, when families laid flowers on soldiers’ graves. Our post on the origins of the holiday carries that history.
