What a continental breakfast includes, and the rule that defines it: nothing is cooked on site

A continental breakfast is defined by what it leaves out. Nothing arrives cooked to order and nothing has to stay hot, so the spread lands finished and cold.

That leaves a short, stable list:

  • Pastry: croissants, muffins, danishes, sometimes bagels with spreads.
  • Cut fruit, by the bowl or the platter.
  • Yogurt, as plain cups or as parfaits layered with granola.
  • Juice, with coffee and tea beside it.

Expect $10 to $16 per person, the cheapest catered format that still reads as hospitality rather than a snack. Delivery, service, and tax push the real figure up by about a quarter.

Why continental breakfast catering is the default meeting order: no chafers, no serving window, no host

Every hot format carries a clock. Eggs and potatoes need chafers, fuel, and a person to light them, and they are best inside a window that opens on delivery.

A cold spread has no window. It is right at 8:00 and still right at 9:20, because attendance is a drift and not a moment. Early arrivals find food waiting, stragglers find the same food, and nobody stands behind the table.

It also fits a room with no kitchen. Nothing to plug in, nothing to keep hot, no reason to send staff. Setup is about ten minutes.

When a continental breakfast stops being enough: the session that runs into the middle of the day

Two limits, and the second is the costly one.

The first is the hour. Continental earns its keep when the meeting opens the day, and what to send once most people arrived fed is on our breakfast catering by format page.

The second is duration. This is first-hour food, gone before the agenda gets real. A session that starts at 9:00 and pushes past 12:30 has been fed pastry and nothing else, and a room in that state remembers the pastry table unkindly. Once a meeting owns the middle of the day, the order needs a hot item or a lunch behind it.

How to order continental breakfast catering for an office: the eat rate, the coffee exception, and the serving ware nobody brings

Morning does not eat like noon. At a lunch meeting almost everyone takes a plate, while a real share of any morning room ate on the way in. A drop-in table also loses whoever walks past it, so a straight headcount overbuys the food.

Coffee is the exception and goes in at the full number, since it runs out well before the fruit does. Vessel sizes, decaf split, and milk options are on our coffee catering for offices page.

No staff comes with this format, so confirm that plates, napkins, cups, and serving tongs are included, not assumed. Time the drop 30 to 45 minutes early: a cold spread can wait, a locked lobby cannot.

Cost tables and a tier-by-tier breakdown live in our post on breakfast catering costs and formats, and the wider set is on every catering menu format. Hand CaterAi the meeting time, a headcount, and a per-head ceiling, and continental spreads come back priced to it.

Continental breakfast catering FAQs

What is included in a continental breakfast catering order?

Pastry first: croissants, muffins, and danishes, sometimes bagels with spreads. Then cut fruit, yogurt cups or granola parfaits, juice, and coffee. Some caterers add cereal or a sliced loaf. None of it is cooked to order, and that is why it prices under every other breakfast format.

Is a continental breakfast enough for a morning meeting?

For a meeting that opens the day and finishes before lunch, yes. Nobody expects a hot plate at 8:00, and the spread does its job while the room fills. For a session that pushes past noon, put a hot item on the order or book lunch behind it.

Does a continental breakfast include any hot food?

Only the coffee and the tea. The format is defined by the missing hot line: no eggs, no potatoes, no breakfast meat, nothing held over fuel. That absence removes the staff, the equipment, and the serving window. Add hot dishes and the order reprices upward.

Is a continental breakfast too casual for a client or board meeting?

Not if the sourcing is good. Bakery croissants, real cut fruit, and proper coffee read as hospitable at an early meeting, where a full hot breakfast would read as strange. Casual comes from a supermarket box of donuts, not from the format itself.
