Juneteenth holiday

What Juneteenth marks: Galveston, June 19, 1865, and two and a half years of delay

On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and read out General Order No. 3. It told the last enslaved people in the Confederate states that they were free. The Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect two and a half years earlier and had gone unenforced that far west until the soldiers landed.

It is now a federal holiday. What most planners do not know is that the day already carries a menu of its own, older than the holiday itself.

Why Juneteenth catering runs red: the drink, the cake, and the barbecue holding it up

Juneteenth began in Texas and the food still shows it. Under everything sits Texas barbecue: brisket sliced thick, hot links, ribs, sauce on the side or nowhere at all. Our guide to regional barbecue sauce styles explains why.

Then the table goes red:

  • The red drink: hibiscus punch or strawberry soda
  • Red velvet cake, or strawberry shortcake
  • Watermelon, cut and cold
  • Red beans, and anything stewed down in tomato and chili

The color is usually explained as resilience, and as the blood of those who never heard the news. Food historians trace the drink further back than that, to hibiscus and kola nut carried out of West Africa.

Soul food and Caribbean kitchens cook the day too. The red is the part that has to be there. The barbecue itself is $18 to $30 a head, and BBQ catering has the ordering math.

How to book Juneteenth catering from a Black-owned kitchen: one date, not a month

The clearest way to mark the day is the order itself. Buy the lunch from a Black-owned kitchen and let that be what the office does. Black-owned catering lists the ones that deliver to your address, and plenty of them smoke their own meat.

The booking pressure is nothing like a month-long observance. A month spreads its requests over four weeks. Juneteenth puts all of them on one date, and the kitchens people want are small. Book in May. The first week of June is already late.

The four-week version of this same order is Black History Month catering.

When to put the Juneteenth lunch on the calendar: the 18th, or the 19th itself

Government offices close, and so do banks. Private employers split, with no settled convention either way, so the first thing to settle is whether your own building is open.

If it closes, the lunch goes on the 18th. If it stays open, the lunch goes on the 19th, which is the better version.

Then put the answer in the message that names the lunch. On a holiday this evenly divided, half the floor guesses wrong.

Most caterers will not send a red drink unless somebody asks. Put it in the brief for CaterAi next to the headcount. June’s other observances, and the dates that follow them sit in the holiday directory.

Juneteenth catering FAQs

What food is traditionally served on Juneteenth?

Barbecue and red food. Brisket, ribs and hot links out of the Texas tradition, then the red drink, red velvet cake, strawberry shortcake, watermelon and red beans. The color carries the meaning, so an order that arrives without anything red on it has missed the part people look for.

What is the Juneteenth red drink?

A red beverage poured at the celebration, most often hibiscus punch, strawberry soda or a red lemonade. Food historians link it to hibiscus and kola nut brought from West Africa. Almost any caterer can supply one, and almost none will offer it unprompted, so put it in the order by name.

Do private companies close for Juneteenth?

Some do and some do not. It is a federal holiday, so government offices and banks close, but private employers each set their own policy. Confirm yours before you pick a date, because it decides whether the lunch lands on the 18th or the 19th.

Is Juneteenth the same thing as Emancipation Day?

Not exactly. Emancipation Day is a name several dates carry, including April 16 in Washington, DC. Juneteenth is the Galveston date, June 19, and the one that became a federal holiday. It has also long been called Freedom Day and Jubilee Day.
