How to pick vegetarian catering dishes people choose on purpose: order by reputation, not by substitution

The vegetarian tray that comes back full was ordered wrong. Somebody took the menu, pulled the meat out, and sent through what was left: plain pasta, roasted vegetables, a hummus wrap. Nobody picks that, least of all the vegetarians, who have been handed it at every job.

Order dishes with a reputation of their own instead. Eggplant parmesan, palak paneer, a mushroom and poblano taco, halloumi off a grill. The test is whether anyone would choose the dish with the chicken still available.

Indian catering has the deepest bench for it. About half the menu is meatless before anyone asks, and a paneer or chickpea curry eats like a main course.

How much vegetarian food to order for a mixed office: a third of every format, before anyone declares

Make a third of the order meatless, whatever format you bought. Platters, pans on a tray line, boxes: a third of each, whether five people in the room are vegetarian or nobody says they are.

The reason is traffic, not headcount. A good meatless dish gets eaten by everybody, so a pan sized to the four who declared is scraped out before two of them reach it. The meat eaters raid the vegetarian pan all afternoon, and a vegetarian has no move in the other direction.

A third is a starting position, not a final answer. The fuller ratio math is in our guide to vegetarian office catering.

How to serve vegetarian catering on a shared line: separate pans, separate spoons, honest labels

Two details on the line separate a real option from an afterthought.

  • Own pans, own serving spoons. One shared spoon carries chicken into the chickpeas, and the dish is then off the menu for the people it was bought for.
  • Set those pans early, ahead of the meat. Position is a recommendation, and anything past the hot proteins collects what is left of the appetite.

Mark vegetarian and vegan as two separate things, because they are. Vegetarian allows dairy and eggs, so paneer, feta, ricotta, and yogurt dressing all belong on a vegetarian line. A single shared marker walks a vegan guest into a cream sauce.

When to make the whole office order vegetarian: menus nobody reads as meatless

A room eats an entirely vegetarian lunch without noticing, as long as the menu is one it already wanted. Pizza and pasta family style, an Indian buffet with dal and two paneer dishes, a mezze spread with falafel. None of those land as a menu with something taken out, and the bill sits at or a little under the meat version.

The long version lives on the blog. Our vegetarian office catering guide covers the cuisines that carry a meatless menu, the protein anchors that make an entree eat like one, the ingredients that look vegetarian and are not, and cost by format. If the room skips dairy and eggs too, start from vegan catering.

CaterAi quotes the meatless share as part of the menu, so the vegetarian dishes get chosen alongside everything else. Every other diet we build orders around has a page on the catering by dietary need hub.

Vegetarian catering FAQs

How much of an office catering order should be vegetarian?

Start at a third, in whatever format you bought, and hold it whether the room has five declared vegetarians or none. Good meatless dishes get eaten by everyone, so a pan sized only to the vegetarian count empties early.

What makes a vegetarian catering option feel like a real choice?

A dish with its own name and its own following, rather than the meat entree with the meat left out. Eggplant parmesan, palak paneer, a halloumi skewer, a mushroom taco. The test is whether somebody would order it with the chicken still on the menu.

Should vegetarian dishes be labeled separately from vegan?

Yes, every time. Vegetarian allows dairy and eggs, so paneer, feta, ricotta, and mayo dressings are vegetarian but not vegan. One shared marker sends a vegan guest into a cream sauce. Put a card at each dish.

Can you order an all-vegetarian office lunch without anyone missing meat?

Regularly, yes, when the menu is one the room already wanted. It fails only when the all-vegetarian order turns out to be the plain edition of a dish people were expecting with meat in it.
