Platter and tray catering FAQs
A party platter, or catering tray, is food arranged on one shared tray and priced by the tray, not by the person. Guests serve themselves, so platters suit team lunches, meetings and casual office parties.
A common rule of thumb is one main tray, such as sandwiches, for every 12 to 15 guests. Add one veggie tray and one fruit tray for every 20 to 25 guests, and one dessert tray for every 20. Each catering partner lists how many people a tray serves, so check that number first.
Platters work best when people eat together in one room. Boxed lunches suit distributed teams, individual dietary needs and working lunches at desks. See boxed lunch catering for that format.
Plan on 24 to 48 hours. Some catering partners take same-day orders and large orders can need more time, so check the lead time on the partner's menu.
