Why a coffee chat is worth a catering order at all: an empty table says something too
Coffee chats are the connection formats: skip-levels, new-hire meet-and-greets, mentor pairings, leadership office hours. Four to ten people, one conversation, no agenda worth printing.
Those meetings fail quietly. A slot that holds only a conversation has nothing at stake, so it moves once, moves again, then stops appearing. Food on the table is one of the only signals that somebody meant it.
Two people can walk to a coffee shop. Four cannot, and that is where an order starts. It is not a shrunken catered lunch either: it is the gap between a carafe with good pastries beside it and four people sitting at nothing. The meal-sized version, for the week a new hire starts, is our new hire onboarding lunch guide.
