Pride Catering

The default June order is a rainbow sheet cake at three on a June afternoon. People photograph it and that is the program.

Order the cake. Nobody objects to frosting, and a room that gets dessert is a better room. It just should not be the only line on the invoice. What separates a Pride Month program from a decoration is where the money lands.

The budget does not have to move for that. Pride Month catering is priced as a themed lunch and nothing more. Call it $12 to $20 per person, which is what an ordinary Tuesday costs. Picking the kitchen is the only real work.

We asked our LGBTQ+ culinary partners what inclusion looks like from behind a pass. Jazz Souisay and David Prettyman of Bali Kitchen in New York kept it to one rule: treat everyone, whether a customer or team member, with respect and dignity. James Schenk of Destino in San Francisco made it a service standard, everyone treated like a VIP. Kelly Abshire of Ararat Mid-East Fusion in Austin was less formal: at Ararat, you can sport your skirt and your mustache.

Pride is parade week in most cities, and that hits delivery before it touches the menu. San Francisco runs its parade down Market Street on Sunday, with the Civic Center festival the day before, and barricades go up ahead of both.

If the office sits inside a route, ask two things at booking: whether a driver can reach the loading door, and what the last delivery slot is before the street closes.

June is tight for a second reason. Juneteenth catering on the 19th draws on the same short roster, and every other office is booking a Pride lunch from it.

Asked whether Ararat celebrates Pride Month, Kelly Abshire answered in four words. Every month is Pride Month. It is a fair standard for a customer too.

The practical version is small. Take two kitchens from the June order and leave them in the standing lunch rotation, so an ordinary week in October reads the same as a week in June.
