What Mental Health Awareness Month catering can and cannot do: start with what it cannot
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It follows April’s Earth Day and sustainability catering on the awareness calendar, and it is the harder of the two to cater honestly.
Food is the easiest thing on a May checklist to schedule, which is how it ends up standing in for the work. Catering does not treat anything. It does not lighten a caseload, fix a manager, or make it safe to say you are struggling. That is what the benefits plan, the workload, and a manager’s first response are for.
An office that caters lunch in May and files it under mental health support has the order backwards. What food can do is smaller, and real.
