Welcome to Zerocater’s Culture Club where we’ll introduce you to the standout stars working behind the scenes to make sure our customers have delicious office meals and snacks, each and every time.
- Name: Stephanie Lee
- Title: Full-Stack Engineer
- City: San Francisco
“Stephanie is one of the most prolific contributors on Zerocater’s Engineering team. I am constantly amazed by the sheer number of features she is able to release in a given week. She never seeks out the spotlight, so only those who work directly with her understand the dedication she has to making the lives of our customers and our team better, each and every day. She is an avid rock climber and cat enthusiast who enjoys board games and solving puzzles.” – Dave Cao, Head of Product
In your own words, what does Zerocater do?
We hook people up with a variety of amazing food and snacks that they might not normally try.
Tell us about your role on the team.
I work on the Engineering team as a Full-Stack Engineer.
What were you doing before, and why did you decide to join Zerocater?
Prior to working at Zerocater, I worked at Angie’s List, which helps connect people to local service providers, similar to the role Zerocater plays in connecting companies with food from local restaurants. While I learned a lot in that role, the engineering team had about 100 people, and I wanted to work on a smaller team where my role would have a wider range of responsibilities and greater impact. So I took a year off, traveled the world (Turkey, Taiwan, Japan, Sweden, Finland, Denmark) before accepting a position at Zerocater.
What is the hardest part about your role at Zerocater?
Aside from not “over-snacking”? Building and maintaining tools to support operations for two very complex products as part of a small engineering team means there is no end to requests and projects pouring in. Keeping up with everything can be a challenge at times, but that is also part of the fun.
What is the best part about your role at Zerocater?
As part of a small team, I love that we are constantly shipping code changes and making improvements to our dashboards and tools. Instead of being limited to working on just one tool or one page, I get to work with all of our different products and apps, across the entire code stack, so there’s never a boring day.
What are the opportunities for growth at Zerocater?
Right now on the Engineering team, the potential for growth is pretty great. We discuss career goals and next steps frequently with our manager.
At this moment, what are you most excited about at Zerocater?
Our Snacks product is really taking off, and as a newer product, there are a lot of operational challenges and questions we are still trying to answer. I really enjoy the problem solving and troubleshooting that we do on a day to day basis.
How do you start your day?
Get out my laptop — actually before that, coffee. Then get out my laptop, check email, Slack, and our team Trello board for the state of the products/features everyone is working on. Then start coding!
Tell us two lies and one truth about yourself.
- I once competed in the Junior Olympics.
- I own a board game worth over $1000.
- I once bribed a flight attendant to bump me to first class.
If there was a movie made about your life what would the movie title be and who would you want to play you?
Movie title: Cat woman
To play me: Helena Bonham Carter
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I’m an avid rock climber, cat mom, bookworm, and have a collection of hundreds of board games, most of which I haven’t played — I just love the art and learning the rules!
Last question, what is your favorite meal you’ve had at Zerocater?
That’s a tough one. I’m a huge fan of Marcella’s Lasagneria and La Fromagerie’s sandwiches.
The Answer to Two Lies and One Truth?
The Truth? Steph competed in the Junior Olympics… for Fencing!
