Chicago is one of the newest markets Zerocater has the pleasure of serving. We chose Chicago for many reasons: the businesses, the neighbourhoods, and most importantly, the food. I grew up in the ‘not quite a suburb’ of Kankakee, IL, but always knew I wanted to move to the big city. When I was researching apartments in Chicago, I quickly realized that it truly is a ‘City of Neighborhoods.’
One of the hippest neighborhoods in Chicago is Wicker Park, located on the West Side of North Avenue. I lived near the ‘Six Corners’ of Wicker Park for over three years, and in my time, was able to try everything from Indian to ice cream.
Without further adieu, I’d like to submit to you my top 5 favorite restaurants in Wicker Park!
- Jerry’s Sandwiches – My first experience with Jerry’s is quite the story. I asked my then girlfriend (now fiancé!) at the time if she wanted to go grab a quick sandwich, to which she agreed. We strolled into that restaurant in flip flops, shorts, and tees as I thought it was a quick-serve deli. Turns out, Jerry’s is actually an extremely classy joint! There was a live jazz performance, hundreds of craft beers, and an unbelievable amount of specialty sandwich creations. My go-to is any sandwich listed in their ‘Fried Chicken’ category.
- Dimo’s Pizza – Ever had a Chicken-N-Waffles slice of pizza? Welcome to Dimo’s. Serving daily and specialty slices, beer and more, Dimo’s opened its second location in Wicker Park in 2013 and was an immediate hit. A few of Dimo’s staple slices include mac-n-cheese, The Philly, and s’mores. Fun fact: Dimo’s Pizza is a Zerocater vendor and would be happy to serve up your next company pizza party.
- Smoke Daddy – Everyone loves a finger-lickin’ good BBQ, and Smoke Daddy does it better than anyone else. Live blues music, signature sauces, great atmosphere, and service, make sure to get to Smoke Daddy when visiting Wicker Park. Coincidentally, Smoke Daddy is also a Zerocater vendor.
- Big Star – Located right off the Six Corners, Big Star is one of the best patios Wicker Park has to offer. Step into authentic Mexican cuisine, a large tequila selection, and a beautiful view of the ACTUAL Wicker Park. Pro Tip: After a few tequila cocktails, step on over to the Blue Line for your ride home. If you’re still not ready to call it a night, hop across the street to a classic ‘Speakeasy’ bar, The Violet Hour.
- The Bongo Room – This place always has a wait, but it’s worth it! Widely regarded as some of the best brunches in Chicago, The Bongo Room is close to the Damen Blue Line Stop, a few blocks down Milwaukee Avenue. With dishes like Specialty Pancakes and a perfected bloody mary, The Bongo Room is a great place to spend your Sunday morning brunch with friends.
