The tradition started 90 years ago.
Reuben Mattus worked vigorously at his mother’s ice cream shop in New York City to produce the highest quality product. His hard work was continued by the family business throughout the years, and eventually Häagen-Dazs ice cream was born.
Reuben’s exquisite taste in ingredients enables this ice cream to stand out from the rest. He would only work with items like dark chocolate straight from Belgium and vanilla beans that had to be hand-picked from Madagascar. (It makes me wonder what kind of a gift-giver Reuben may have been back in his day).
Häagen-Dazs started out with three flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and coffee. Since then, the company has launched over 30 flavors and the attention to detail has not changed. To honor all of Reuben’s hard work and success, ‘Free Cone Day’ takes place today!
My favorite Häagen-Dazs flavors are, in order: Dulce de Leche, Rocky Road and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. I love ice cream flavors with vanilla as the base and chocolate, cookie dough, or caramel additions swirled throughout.
If the extravagant flavors and toppings Häagen-Dazs don’t excite you, you can never go wrong with an original vanilla ice cream pint and old-fashioned root beer float. I had one of these sinfully delicious drinks this past weekend and there is truly nothing like it.
Enjoy a free ice cream today and don’t forget it’s on the house! If you are near one of Häagen-Dazs’ stores today, free cones start at 4pm and go until 8pm. Make sure to get there early because they just might run out!
