For those of you that may not be keeping up with your calendars, tomorrow is May 5th, otherwise known as Cinco de Mayo. The date is observed in Mexico, as well as the US, to celebrate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla; not Mexico’s Independence Day, for which it is often confused. However, many people now take this as an opportunity to indulge margaritas, cervezas, guacamole, tacos, etc … And can you really blame them?
Here are some of our favorite spots across the country to enjoy some Zerocater Cinco de Mayo favorites!
Dos Toros, New York
When Leo and Oliver Kremer, two brothers originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, came east and realized that there simply was nothing that compared to their favorite taqueria growing up, they decided they had to do something about it. Dos Toros now has six locations throughout New York City and Brooklyn.
What to order:
You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but here we go for the big, fat burrito with all of the fixin’s
Alicia’s Tamales Los Mayas, San Francisco
Alicia Villanueva came to La Cocina, a shared commissary in San Francisco’s Mission District, in 2010 with the dream of starting her own tamale cart and sharing her stuffed-with-love tamales with the city. You can now find her five days a week at Justin Hermann Plaza and every Friday at Off the Grid Fort Mason.
What to order:
The tamales of course! Alicia’s offers many different meat options and vegetarian and vegan choices as well
Cemitas Puebla, Chicago
Puebla, Mexico is actually the inspiration for this concept, highlighting vibrant flavors, and fresh ingredients. There are currently two locations in Chicago.
What to order:
You should be digging into the namesake item here. Cemitas Pueblas prides itself on their homemade sesame seed rolls, and chipotle sauce, as well as hand-pulled Oaxacan cheese. Topped off with avocado and your choice of meat, this belly-busting sandwich is definitely the way to go.
We ask just one thing, that you eat responsibly!
