Just across the Hudson River from New York City is a little city called Hoboken. This tiny square mile has seen many monumental things occur including the birth of Frank Sinatra, the first organized baseball game, and Bruce Springsteen’s Glory Days music video. It is also the place that I have called home for the past three years.
This Friday, May 1st, one of Hoboken’s crown jewels, Pier 13, opens back up for the first time since October. When the weather is cooperative, there is no better spot to be in the ‘Bokes. They offer ticketed cruises, kayaking, paddle boarding, and even sailing, but the real action is on the pier.
When you first approach, you will be greeted by an array of six to ten food trucks, depending on what day you plan your visit. Some of my personal favorites that have been on the roster are Pizza Vita, offering a wood-burning pie that is ready in a mere 90 seconds, The Taco Truck, which executes its namesake flawlessly but should be recognized for their divine tortas, and Luke’s Lobster which doles out buttery and delicious shrimp and crab rolls.
After you have decided what fare you are in the mood for that day, you can mosey on down by the water with some friends. Once there, I recommend splitting a pitcher of handmade sangria, gathering a couple of bean bags and beach chairs, and soaking up the amazing views. If you plan right, there is also a live band and they often have a projection screen showing sporting events or movies.
I am lucky enough to live mere steps away from the Pier, so when it opens I can be found there an almost a nightly basis. If you are not as fortunate, it is easily accessible by PATH train, NJ Transit bus, or NY Waterway Ferry (if you show your ferry pass or ticket, you’ll get a 15% discount on Monday-Thursday!)
